Alberta-based spill remediation firm ESSI International, is in the process of completing a landmark deal with a Saudi prince that is intended to mitigate oil spill risks and enhance clean-up operations.
Headed up by Wayne Bennett, the company offers two products that are derived from old tyres. In numerous practical demonstrations, Mr Bennett has shown how the two products - Alpha and Bravo - can be used to absorb both land-based and water-based spills.
The Alpha product is also expected to be used around wellheads to prevent leaks, while Saudi workers will also be trained to use the Bravo product to separate oil and water quickly and easily in the event of a spill.
"It's pretty amazing stuff. It has so many applications. There is a really unique opportunity for training and fixing sites that have damaged," said Phil Allen, director of marketing and enrolment at the local college in Lakeland, speaking to the Vermilion Standard.
Recycling Product News also reports that the company is helping to improve recovery rates by using the portion of recycled tyre rubber that cannot be turned into products such as playground mats, roofing tiles or curb stops.
