Companies are looking to universities to find those with the skills they need, according to a study.
Research from the manufacturers' organisation EEF entitled the Innovation Monitor showed that firms are collaborating successfully with outside bodies.
Peter OGrady, West Midlands' spokesperson for EEF, stated: "Real progress has been made by both companies, in their efforts to collaborate with outside expertise, and by universities in becoming more responsive to business."
This could interest those companies looking to recruit in the oil and gas industry.
It was found that half of the companies surveyed are working with universities over a range of issues, including accessing specialist technology and collaborative projects.
EEF offered some new potential initiatives including Expanding Knowledge Transfer Partnerships to help more companies collaborate with universities.
The engineering and manufacturing support and employment advising company claims to change clients' ability to work, innovate and react to climate change.
Other recent figures by EEF found that pay settlements in manufacturing have risen slightly.
