Alberta-based team Coole Immersive is strengthening safety training in the oil and gas industry and other key sectors with new simulation technology that grounds workers in the physics of the environment they are working.
Speaking to the Edmontonian, Terry Smith and Kevin McNulty, two long-serving oil and gas training veterans, explained that there can be disastrous consequences when employees do not fully understand the forces at work on derricks and other infrastructure.
Enter the Service Rig Training module, a new virtual reality simulation technology developed as an immersive training environment that will enhance learning in the oil and gas industry in the same way that flight simulators aid pilot cadets.
Commenting on the success of the new learning platform, Mr McNulty claimed: "Our system created an unexpected outcome. The benefits of the training are evident within two to three weeks."
The technology is based on the principle of 'learning by doing' and the platform provides an engaging roleplay environment to develop these skills, as well as demonstrating the consequences of bad decisions.
