The dynamic positioning sector is focusing on training and technical proficiency to promote oil and gas industry growth, according to the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA).
Commenting recently, the company's technical adviser Ian Giddings said that there have been marked advances in the complexity and diversity of dynamic positioning technology.
Dynamic positioning employs software and sensor systems to allow a vessel to automatically maintain positioning, speed and heading with a high degree of precision.
"More focus has also been placed on people issues such as the training, experience and certification of those involved in the marine side of the offshore industry," Mr Giddings added.
The IMCA is also helping to improve operational standards in the sector with an incident report database that spans 25 years.
Using this data, the organisation can work closely with the oil and gas industry to establish common trends and identify potential hazards for vessel operators, equipment suppliers, training establishments and other industry participants.
