Former rebels have given their backing to Nigeria's new president Goodluck Jonathan as the person best place to address endemic problems in the Niger Delta region.
Speaking to the BBC, Victor Ebokawe, a prominent former member of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, explained that because Mr Jonathan grew up in the region, he understands the tensions between the local community and Big Oil.
Rebels agreed to a ceasefire late last year in return for oil and gas training and jobs. New training requirements have now been instituted into law under a local content bill approved by Mr Jonathan.
The president was sworn in earlier this month after the death of former premier Umaru Yar'Adua after a protracted illness.
Mr Ebokawe added that the incoming president is also well placed to mediate the political divide between northern and southern states.
"[Mr Jonathan] is a man who is ready to rule Nigeria as one Nigeria," he commented.
