Energy firms need to focus on growth-oriented projects in order to survive the downturn and meet future energy demand, Exxon chairman and chief executive Rex Tillerson has claimed.
Following the release of the company's energy management strategy up to 2030, Mr Tillerson said that Market-based policies focused on profitability would be key to continued economic success.
"Our best hope for re-energizing growth and creating new jobs is a stable policy framework that supports investment, research and development and the international competitiveness of American companies," he said.
Such strategies could include the promotion of a diverse workforce, which the company utilises to develop long-term profitability.
The company operates a nationalisation programme whereby during an initial period of a project, expatriate workers are employed to provide the domestic population with the training and development necessary to serve the energy industry, thereby improving long-term efficiency and achieving greater integration.
Oil and gas training is provided to nationals to fill both operational and leadership roles.
