ExxonMobil has reportedly struck a deal with Kosmos Energy to take on a major stake in exploration and production activities off the coast of Ghana.
Speaking to Daily Graphic on condition of anonymity, a source close to the negotiations claimed that the global supermajor will take on operatorship of the West Cape Three Points field.
However, Ian Springett, chief financial officer of Tullow, told Dow Jones that the Irish firm would retain control of the Jubilee field. He welcomed ExxonMobil's putative entry to the operation and expressed his belief that it would not protract current production schedules.
"Exxon potentially coming in as a partner would be very good. It gives a lot of credibility to the project," he commented.
Industry sources known to Daily Graphic were harmonious in supporting the acquisition, with many pointing to ExxonMobil's proven technical expertise and commitment to training and development elsewhere in Africa as signs of the benefits the deal is likely to bring to Ghanaians.
