The family of a Scottish oil worker who died while working on an offshore rig in Denmark have welcomed the launch of a police inquiry into the accident.
The Aberdeen Press and Journal reports that the inquiry will focus on establishing responsibility for the death of 27-year-old Sam Youngman who was subcontracted to work on the Maersk Resolute jack-up rig.
Particular attention will be paid to investigating whether the other contractual parties involved in the accident, Schlumberger and Dong Exploration and Production, met all necessary training and safety requirements.
The decision to launch a police inquiry followed the completion of a civil investigation overseen by the Danish Energy Agency.
The report concluded that Schlumberger "failed to ensure that employees assigned to [the company's] special tasks at short notice had the necessary training and experience in using the relevant equipment".
Meanwhile, the UK's Health and Safety Executive has also stressed this week that oil and gas training are essential to ensure operational risks are kept to an absolute minimum in the offshore sector.
