General Electric has signed a landmark agreement with the government of Alberta, paving the way for two new technology centres in Calgary.
The global energy giant has received permission to build the GE Global Heavy Oil Centre of Excellence and the GE Innovation Centre, paving the way for diverse research and training programmes to support the regional oil and gas industry, as well as auxiliary sectors such as healthcare.
"We look forward to working with Alberta's innovators and leaders to drive new technologies that will advance economic growth within the province and globally,' said Elyse Allan, president and chief executive of GE Canada.
Doug Horner, Alberta's minister of advanced education and technology, added that such investments are crucial to the continued expansion and development of the province's energy industry.
GE has also recently announced that a new hydrogen power plant project in British Columbia has come online this month.
