Ghana Oil Drilling Academy and Consultancy (GODAC) has called on the government of Ghana to ensure that local people can find a place in the country's nascent oil and gas industry.
Speaking to Modern Ghana, the president of the organisation Prince Frimpong Donkor said there is a danger that unless strict legislation is put in place, local Ghanaians may be unable to find a place in the industry when the country's first well comes on stream in the final quarter of the year.
His comments came during the graduation of 34 students from the academy in Accra.
"We do not want our people to be only cleaners in the oil industry. We want them to take up leadership position in few years to come," he said.
If it is to enforce new oil and gas legislation, Ghana may look to Nigeria or Uganda for direction. Nigeria incorporated its local content act earlier this year, while Uganda's oil and gas bill is currently making its way through parliament.
