The vice-president of India has expressed his desire to strengthen links with Myanmar in the fields of energy and training.
Speaking at a banquet in Yangon earlier this week, Shri M Hamid Ansari said that substantial gains had been made in increasing trade in the oil and gas industry, in addition to developing strong vocational training links.
He also spoke of the mutual gains that have arisen as a result of the Kaladan multimodal project, which was signed in April 2008 and opened up trade links between the two countries.
"The importance of enhancing interaction between North East States of India and Myanmar cannot be overemphasised and you occupy a central place in our Look East policy," he added.
India's Oil and Natural Gas Corp holds a 20 per cent interest in Myanmar's gas rich A-1 block and is currently reviewing plans to build a pipeline between the two countries to meet its burgeoning energy demands.
