Iraqi naval authorities will take over from coalition forces in managing security at one of two key offshore oil platforms in the Persian Gulf, a top military official has confirmed.
According to the DPA news agency, vice-admiral William Gortney said that the coalition has recently agreed to hand over responsibility for security at the Khawr Al Amaya Oil Terminal to the Iraqi navy.
He added that full control of Al Basrah Oil Terminal - another key strategic port - may also be passed over by December, giving the national authorities full control of its Persian Gulf assets.
Mr Gortney concluded by stating that the decision to hand the port over was made after Iraqi security forces put in a strong performance during training exercises.
Development in Iraq is gathering considerable momentum, particularly in private investment in the country.
Economic prospects in Kurdistan also received a boost this month with Heritage Oil's announcement that it has discovered a multibillion-barrel oil reserve in the semi-autonomous state.
