The US Navy has concluded that Iraqi authorities have maintained security at the country's two oil export terminals since taking control of the ports from the British Navy at the end of June.
Fryad Rawandozy, secretary of the Iraqi parliament's Security & Defense Committee told the Iraq Oil Report said that the country has been cognizant and responsive to the risk of maritime piracy and terrorist attacks at the two ports.
Commander Chris Sims, of US Naval Forces Central Command, confirmed: "The withdrawal of UK forces did not have any adverse impact on security at the terminals as US and Iraqi forces are adequately manned and equipped to address any security threats."
He added that the US Navy is continuing to run training sorties with the Iraqi forces to ensure that preparedness remains high.
US security forces have also been hosting training and development initiatives in the north of the country and have helped to establish the Kirkuk Oil Police training institute, where officers undertake lectures, physical training, drill and ceremonies, weapons training and movement techniques.
