Nigeria's president Goodluck Jonathan has reaffirmed the federal government's commitment to oil and gas exploration in the Chad basin, explaining that training and technology will be crucial to operations.

All Africa reports that his comments came as he met with a delegation representing Borno State as they visited the Nigerian capital of Abuja.

Responding to comments made by Borno's state governor Ali Modu Sherrif, Mr Jonathan said that the government is currently investigating alternative funding options in a bid to address the critical shortfall in oil infrastructure in the Chad basin and other parts of the country.

Alhaji Shehu Umar Garbai, the shehu of Borno, responded by commending Mr Jonathan for the commitment to improving economic conditions in the country since taking office earlier this year.

He said workers in the region have great faith in his ability to strengthen key sectors such as the oil and gas industry and return the benefits to ordinary Nigerians.
