The Kazakhstan-British Technical University (KBTU) has brought a new supercomputer online that will allow the institute to achieve a step-change in advanced training programmes.
The new ten-teraflop supercomputer is expected to be listed among the 15 most powerful supercomputers in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
"Establishing the university's own high-performance computing system will allow us to attain the level of advanced fundamental researches and methodologies of specialists training," commented Iskander Beysembetov, rector at KBTU.
The supercomputer will enable the institute to develop new training environments simulating fluid dynamics, weather patterns, seismic activity prediction and nuclear explosion dynamics, added Michail Seregin, general manager of IBM CIS.
The computer is built on an IBM BladeCenter platform with digital subsurface technology provided by consultancy and training simulation specialist Paradigm.
In addition to its oil and gas industry faculty, the KBTU also offers training in the spheres of information technology and economics and finance.
