The oil and gas industry in Kuwait could be set for further expansion with the news that the state has entered into an agreement with GE Energy to construct a 2,000-megawatt power plant.
Based in Sabiya, the new plant is to be built by GE Energy and Hyundai Heavy Industries and is to feature six Frame 9FA gas turbines.
Kuwait's environmental profile is to be maintained through emission-reducing technologies due to be fitted to these.
Dr Bader Shabeeb Al Shriaan, Kuwait's minister of electricity and water, reveals that the project sets a new benchmark for the region's oil and gas industry.
"This will be the largest combined cycle power plant in Kuwait," he says.
"It is an important step in our plans to boost power capacity to meet continuing demand."
Kuwaiti oil minister Sheikh Ahmed al-Abdullah al-Sabah recently correctly predicted in an interview with Bloomberg that OPEC would maintain its quotas on oil production going into the colder months of the year.
