The Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies (NOFO) has announced that it will provide training and development for 50 permanent workers to man the country's coast to deal with any oil spills quickly and efficiently.
According to the Norway Post, the oil and gas industry will also work in closer collaboration with municipal bodies to ensure that there is an understanding of the roles and responsibilities to be assumed should a spill occur.
"Oil spill preparedness is expensive. That is why we have decided to boost the annual general financial support to the [municipal preparedness areas] by more than 50 per cent," said Sjur Knudsen, managing director of the NOFO.
He added that fishing crews operating in spill zones have also undertaken oil training courses to allow them to contribute to the cleanup effort by utilising towing capacity and local knowledge of the affected area.
Over in the US, the Environmental Protection Agency has also directed Citation to provide enhanced spill preparedness training to its workers in the oil and gas industry following a spill in Wyoming.
