The provision of safety training for offshore workers serving the oil and gas industry has been a key contributor to the success of the OPITO academy, chief executive David Doig has commented.
A statement from the chief executive came as the company celebrated a successful first year in operation, during which it collaborated with Step Change in Safety to create a new set of training standards for workers on oil and gas installations on the UK continental shelf.
"Among the biggest initiatives for employers has been the development of new minimum industry safety training standards for the offshore workforce," said Mr Doig.
He added that the centre has also helped the UK to establish itself as a worldwide centre of excellence in the provision of training and development for the oil and gas industry.
The group estimates that the sector provides work for around 480,000 Britons and insists that a skilled and competent workforce is essential to the operation and success of the continental shelf.
