Deaths and injuries in the oil and gas sector could be reduced through a new industry standard unveiled by OPITO.
The regulation, which aims to cut the number of people killed while driving on the job, has been described as a step forward in training by managing director for the organisation's international branch Ian Laing, Zawya reports.
He noted most vehicle fatalities occur in developing countries and so the standard is being pushed for employers in the Middle East and Asia Pacific regions.
Mr Laing remarked: "Roads to well sites are busy with traffic carrying equipment and workers and as risks to road safety become greater, oil and gas companies must look to eliminate all road traffic accidents."
The training is expected to focus on a number of areas for improving driver safety, including practical elements and behavioural aspects.
OPITO International currently has branches in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Dubai, with the intention of expanding this network to meet the future needs of the sector.
