The Oil Spill Training Company has launched a new software tool that will allow the oil and gas industry to make quick, accurate and standardised calculations of the size of oil slicks.
Companies using the software will be able to use key input data to assess how much oil has been spilled and can pass the information to response teams and regulators in either statutory or international formats, as required.
The UK-based training and development company has utilised the Bonn Agreement to create standardised volumetric measurements by evaluating the appearance of the oil to estimate its thickness.
Director of the company Kevin O'Connell commented: "This builds trust between industry, regulators and the wider community, allowing everyone to focus on what really matters during an oil spill - mobilising the best response to combat pollution and protect the environment."
The Oil Spill Training Company has worked with the global oil and gas industry in more than 50 countries and has hosted hundreds of training programmes to ensure a rapid response to oil slicks at all levels.
