Following the oil spill off the Louisiana coastline, authorities in Canada have examined their own preparedness for a similar situation and have opted to carry out specific oil spill training to help tackle any future spills in Arctic waters.
According to CBC News, training is due to take place during August, as part of the traditional Operation Nanook.
The Coast Guard is also shipping oil spill kits to 19 Nunavut communities this summer, to help them prepare for any spill that does occur in the region.
The likelihood of an oil spill in the waters of the far north is growing thanks to an increase in traffic passing through the Northwest Passage, Duncan Walker, senior administrative officer in Resolute, Nunavut, told CBC.
While the kits being delivered are not designed for larger spills, they should be able to help deal with any smaller oil spills, Coast Guard officials have said.
Meanwhile, emergency oil spill training is progressing in Louisiana as efforts to clean the spill from the Deepwater Horizon platform continue.
