Oil training could become increasingly important for companies operating in the sector, after one journalist claimed regulatory changes may occur following the Deepwater Horizon incident.
Writing for the Financial Times, Stephanie Kirchgaessner said that while specific changes to legislation are unlikely, this does not mean the sector will carry on as before.
She said US president Barack Obama's administration hopes the Gulf of Mexico spill will result in a "tougher mindset" in industry regulators.
According to news provider Republican American, the qualifications inspectors need for overseeing offshore drilling units have been the same since 2007.
While professionals in the sector are supposed to receive specialised training every year, it added, the implementation of this has been erratic.
Worst-case scenario planning is something that the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will need to examine more thoroughly for offshore drilling projects planned in the future, Ms Kirchgaessner went on to say.
