The provincial Sindh Assembly has given the green light to two new resolutions aimed at promoting the employment of local residents in the oil and gas industry, it has been announced.
Under the initiative, which was unanimously approved by Dr Sikandar Mandhro and Nadeem Ahmed Bhutto of the ruling Pakistan Pakistan People's Party (PPP), new legislation will be put into place to address the 'failings' of the 30 years since oil and gas instillations were established in the Sindh province.
These will include rolling out technical training for locals, with the provincial minister for works and services stating that efforts will be made to ensure at least 50 per cent of jobs are kept within the region.
According to Pakistan's Daily Times, Dr Mandhro's resolution read: "This assembly resolves and recommends to the Government of the Sindh to approach the Federal government to direct all the oil and gas exploration and producing companies operating in the province to abide by all the clauses of the Petroleum Concession Agreement, employing the local people and spending the amounts on socio-economic welfare of local population as contemplated in the agreements."
Earlier this week, Pakistani oil industry officials warned the country's consumers that the price of crude is likely to soar again after a temporary respite.
