Brazilian state oil firm Petrobras committed more than $286 million (£173.8 million) in various social, cultural, environmental and sports projects last year, company accounts show.
According to Brazzilmag, the lion's share of this sizable sum went to funding the development and citizenship programme, which promotes equal opportunities at a local, regional and national level by helping those in disadvantaged situations.
The company plans to spend $670 million in this area through to 2012, with projected spending being allocated to income generation projects, professional training and the protection of rights for young people.
In its environmental funding, Petrobras invested in projects which promoted the theme of "water and climate: contributions to sustainable development".
Earlier this year, the company announced a five-year corporate strategy involving record levels of investment, with $107 billion earmarked for exploration and production projects through to the end of 2013.
Much of this will be channelled into development of the country's vast ultra-deep, pre-salt offshore oil reserves.
