The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has teamed up with Maritime Technical and Allied Services (MARITAS) to conduct safety training for boat captains and mechanics in the Philippines.
MARITAS president Celso De Guzman, a new one-day training course will cover disciplines such as fire-fighting, personal safety and survival, as well as oil spill prevention and containment.
"This is to enhance the basic safety skills of the mentioned small craft personnel and to further promote safety of life and property at sea including basic search and rescue operation and marine pollution," he told the Manila Bulletin.
MARINA administrator Angelo Verdan explained that a total of 24 captains per batch will be able to undertake training at MARITAS headquarters, while greater class sizes will be possible for training undertaken offsite.
MARINA has been in charge of regulating the maritime industry in the Philippines since 1974, and has operated under the auspices of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications since 1979.
