Upstream gas company Qatargas has announced two major developments in its Common Sulphur Project (CSP).
The inauguration of the scheme took place recently, which saw the upstream gas firm's safety and management teams open the final valve to start the flow of molten sulphur into CSP from the Qatargas 2 sulphur storage area.
The project consists of two pipelines that run parallel to each other for 17.5 km.
Some 12,000 tonnes of sulphur are expected to be delivered through the channels every day, which will be converted into granules for global sale in industries such as rubber production, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
Chief executive officer and vice-chair of the corporation Faisal M Al Suwaidi commented on the launch, saying: "This is a moment of achievement for the CSP, which was taken up as a value-added project of Qatargas."
By the end of the decade, Qatargas predicts its liquefied natural gas output will reach 42 million tonnes a year.
