Scandinavian research group SINTEF has urged for increased disaster scenario training and stronger network defences to prevent attacks on computer systems on offshore platforms.
In an interview with Science Daily, Martin Gilje Jaatun, a researcher with the company, explained that the development of integrated operations of the oil and gas industry means that remote computer systems are now much more accessible and an attractive target for hackers.
He added that although no worst-case incidents have occurred yet, some platforms have been crippled by viruses planted into information systems remotely.
"And while scenario training is often used by offshore companies to reduce risks, such training is seldom employed in the field of information security," said Jaatun.
He also went on to warn that the oil and gas industry may be slow to respond and learn lessons from any attacks on offshore platforms, which is likely to create a persistent threat to operations.
In November last year, SINTEF announced that it was to team up with Hitec Products Drilling to establish eDrilling Systems, a new company that is designed to help the oil and gas industry improve efficiency in offshore drilling and well operations.
