The Safety Users Group (SUG) has put together best practice guidelines and a new training programme to accommodate revisions to the IEC 61511 industry standard.
IEC 61511, which is entitled Functional safety - Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector, covers the use of all electrical, electronic and programmable electronic equipment within the process sector, including both the upstream and downstream oil and gas industry.
To ensure that the latest changes to the standard are rolled out across all applicable sectors, the SUG has developed a new online training video setting out best practice guidelines for site safety managers.
Didier Turcinovic, a spokesperson for the Safety Users Group, commented: "The safety community needs to share knowledge and ideas and the involvement of end users such as Shell, manufacturers such as Emerson Process Management and functional safety experts is essential to develop standards like IEC 61511."
The amendments to the standard, first introduced in 2004, have responded to safety issues raised at the Texas City oil refinery and the Buncefield fuel storage depot.
