Saudi International Petrochemical (Sipchem) and the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) are embarking on a joint project to establish a new polymers research base at Dhahran Techno Valley.
According to Arab News, a new memorandum of understanding signed by the two parties has paved the way for the development of a 15,000 square metre research facility that will be brought online by 2012.
As well as providing innovative solutions in areas such as flexible pipe, adhesives, solar cells and power and communication cables, the new research facility will also increase technology transfer between Sipchem and KFUPM through training and development programmes.
Khaled Al-Sultan, the rector of KFUPM, said that the new centre will also strengthen the role of Dhahran Techno Valley - part of the university - as a driver of innovation in the ICT, water and oil and gas industries.
The university has grown steadily since its establishment by royal decree in September 1963, with its average annual enrolment now exceeding more than 8,000 students.
