Iraq's economy is dominated by the petroleum sector, which has traditionally provided about 95% of foreign exchange earnings. So, it is important to prepare specialized people at good level of knowledge to solve technical problems which normally encountered in oil fields, pipelines, and other oil facilities beside we hope to increase our chances to enhance the research activities of our academic institutions.

In 2010 the University of Technology (Baghdad-Iraq) initiated a new department under the name of Petroleum Technology Department. It’s planning is to acquaint students with basic technologies in petroleum engineering and to enhance their knowledge in new production and reservoir technologies. Academically, the Petroleum Technology Department will grant to his graduates Bachelor degree in petroleum engineering technology. The department will accept applicants due to academic year 2010-2011. The students will be exposed to technologies mainly in three different topics; development, exploration, conservation of oil and gas resources.

The university proposal is to specifically specialized the study in the department into two main divisions: Petroleum Production Technology and Petroleum Reservoir Technology.
