Public and private sector organisations will need to work together to ensure workers in Queensland possess the skills necessary to support the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) deal, it has been claimed.
The Australian state's premier Anna Bligh said that the landmark $60 billion deal, signed by China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) and BG Group, will provide extensive employment opportunities for workers throughout Queensland.
"This agreement signals the beginning of a new era in the evolving LNG industry with thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in export revenue for Queensland," she told regional press.
However, she added that cooperation and substantial investment in training and development programmes will be needed to ensure local workers possess the requisite skills to excel in the burgeoning LNG industry.
Under the terms of the new deal, BG Group will provide CNOOC with 72 million tonnes of LNG from its Curtis coal seam gas-to-LNG project in Gladstone over a 20-year period.
