Companies operating in the oil and gas sector could benefit from training older staff members.
This is the suggestion of Wendy Davidson, human resources professional at engineering solutions provider Neptune, who told Scotland's Press and Journal newspaper that the abolishment of the default retirement age could be advantageous to such organisations.
"Retaining the talent of older employees could help employers redress the skills shortage now," she explained.
However, Ms Davidson admitted the changes may have an impact on younger jobseekers trying to enter the market.
According to the specialist, firms that face tight controls over their personnel numbers and HR costs may decide to hold on to their older workers.
This may create an "increasingly competitive jobs market" for less experienced candidates hoping to secure a vacancy, she added.
Recent research by the Department of Work and Pensions revealed one-third of firms implement a compulsory retirement age, with over half feeling it is vital to have one.
