Energy minister Malcolm Wicks has vowed to help build Iraq's oil and gas sector capacity, saying the industry is vital to the country.
Speaking at the end of a visit to Iraq, Mr Wicks said: "Iraq's energy sector is fundamental to the country's reconstruction and economic development, as well as to raising the living standards of Iraqi people."
He met Iraqi oil minister Shahristani, as well as prime minister Maliki.
Mr Wicks added that the UK's particular focus in Iraq is on capacity building and the skills needed in the oil and gas sector.
He explained that as a producer nation, the UK has a long history of oil and gas training and will offer assistance where it is requested.
Yesterday a convoy of 16 oil tankers from the Iraqi Biji complex was due to arrive in Jordan.
Minister of energy and mineral resources Khaldoun Qteishat said both sides are working together to overcome obstacles hindering the transportation of Iraqi oil to Jordan.
