Directors of Training and Education from the world’s leading oil and gas companies gathered in Calgary for the global meeting which has become known as the ‘Davos for Learning in Oil’. Hosted by the SAIT Polytechnic and opened by its CEO and President Irene Lewis (one of Canada’s 100 most influential women) Getenergy for the World saw a clear message delivered for universities, colleges and training companies working in the oil and gas industry; ‘Co-operate, Partner with one another and help us meet the biggest challenge facing the world’s energy industry.’
The message was delivered, in part, by the oil company training directors’ nominated speaker Mike Breward of Penn West (a major Canadian operator). Breward was reflecting the views of senior managers from some 19 oil companies who met on the first morning of this global event. Tasked with delivering a key message to the listening audience of learning providers, the group were clear both about the scale of the opportunities and the need for collaborative solutions.
When interviewed later, Getenergy’s CEO Phil Andrews said “it’s important to recognise that the attitude amongst some training providers and, for that matter, universities and colleges of claiming to be all things to all clients is no longer appropriate or desirable in an industry which needs to hire more people local to its operations than ever before. In countries like Sudan, Iraq, Libya and Indonesia the need for internationally recognised competency standards delivered locally demands a global network of providers capable of co-operating with one another. Getenergy is the longstanding convener of the component parts of such a network and seeks to continue its vital and innovative role of bringing those players together.“
This was Getenergy’s 7th global meeting and 25th regional gathering. The company is independent and hosts its meeting at leading educational institution around the globe. It plans to run another Canadian meeting in March 2012 at SAIT whose hosting of the 2011 meeting was internationally acclaimed. Getenergy’s 8th Global gathering will be hosted by University College London on the 13th and 14th June 2012. www.getenergyevent.com
