Education and Training for the Oil and Gas Industry in Iraq
This is a description of a meeting to consider the education and training needs of the upstream oil and gas industry in Iraq and to develop the contribution that universities, colleges, institutes, government agencies, and training companies, both Iraqi and international, should make to meet the industry’s skill and competency requirements. The overall objective is to support the development of world class education and training services for the oil industry in Iraq.
Background
At the global education and training for oil and gas event held in London from 26 to 28 March this year, one forum session discussed education and training for the industry in Iraq. Unfortunately it was not possible for Iraqi delegates from Baghdad and Basra universities and elsewhere to attend because of visa difficulties, but the meeting was attended by some 70 oil company and education delegates. The overall outcome was a proposal that Getenergy Ltd, the organisers of the London event, should consider approaching the Ministries of Oil, Higher Education, and Science and Technology in Iraq to examine the possibility of holding a special forum dedicated to learning for the oil and gas industry in Iraq. The proposal has now been endorsed by the Iraqi side following meetings in London and Baghdad with the Ministers of Oil, of Higher Education, and Science and Technology.
Getenergy is guided by the Ministry of Oil in consultation with of Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology concerning the extent to which discussions should include the learning and development provisions of the draft oil law.
